The energy transition is causing homes to both use and produce more electricity. Whereas in the past households mainly bought energy from the grid, nowadays many homes have solar panels, heat pumps, electric boilers, charging stations for electric cars, and sometimes even batteries.

In addition, the Netherlands must become completely gas-free by 2050 and the net-metering scheme will be abolished on January 1, 2027. This makes it increasingly important to use locally generated energy as smartly as possible. At the same time, grid congestion is causing the available capacity of the electricity grid to be limited in many places.

To respond to this, Embion is introducing a Home Energy Management System (HEMS): a solution specially developed for homes and housing complexes where several households use energy facilities together.

What is a HEMS?

A Home Energy Management System (HEMS) monitors and controls energy generation, storage and consumption in a home. The system ensures that various appliances work together intelligently.

By coordinating these devices, a home can, for example:

  • use more of its own solar energy
  • avoid peak loads on the grid connection
  • respond to variable electricity prices
  • use energy more efficiently and economically

The result is a home that uses energy smarter, with more control over costs and consumption.

EMS technology now also for homes

For the residential market, an EMS is often too elaborate and costly. Therefore Embion has now developeda HEMS variant, based on the same knowledge and technology, but specifically tailored to homes.

The Embion HEMS is suitable for homes with a 3×25A connection (about 17 kW) and can intelligently control multiple energy devices, such as:

  • solar panels (PV inverter)
  • battery storage (BESS)
  • charging stations for electric vehicles
  • heat pumps
  • electric water heaters

By coordinating these devices, the system ensures that energy use stays within the available grid capacity and that locally generated energy is optimally utilized.

Smart energy management in residential complexes

The Embion HEMS is not only suitable for individual homes. In residential complexes, apartments, vacation parks or other residential communities, several HEMS systems can be connected together.

In such a situation, for example, Embion can place an EMS at the building level and a HEMS in each residence. The EMS monitors the total grid connection of the building and controls joint installations, such as solar panels, batteries or charging stations. The HEMS in the homes then optimizes residents' individual energy use.

This combination makes it possible to share sustainable installations, use grid capacity more efficiently and allow residents to use shared energy facilities flexibly.

Focus on residential communities

Embion focuses its HEMS solution primarily on residential communities where multiple dwellings come together, such as:

  • apartment buildings and owners' associations
  • housing cooperatives
  • nursing homes
  • vacation parks
  • temporary housing
