Optimize solar energy usage during overload with the Embion EMS

Written by Doenja Frints | March 6, 2025

It’s becoming an increasingly common issue: solar panel inverters automatically shutting down when the power grid becomes overloaded. This typically happens on sunny days when a large amount of solar energy is generated and fed back into the grid, while electricity demand remains low.

To safeguard grid stability, both inverters and power grids are equipped with protection mechanisms. These functions temporarily shut down inverters when grid overload or excessive voltage is detected.

While essential for maintaining a stable grid, this also means that solar panels produce less energy and their full potential remains untapped.

Solar power limitations due to overloading

When a grid overload occurs, the voltage rises. Once it reaches the threshold of 253 volts, the inverter automatically shuts down to protect both the grid and the solar system. This cycle repeats until the grid voltage returns to safe levels. During these shutdowns, the solar plant is unable to feed energy back into the grid or use it locally. As a result, both self-consumption and feed-in are restricted, causing solar energy production to fall short of its potential.

How the Embion EMS prevents energy loss

To minimize solar energy losses, the Embion EMS provides a smart and effective solution. Fully brand-independent, the EMS seamlessly manages solar power, charging stations, heat pumps, batteries, and other energy sources and consumers. The system prevents grid overload by dynamically adjusting inverter output. Rather than shutting down inverters completely, the Embion EMS fine-tunes solar energy production to match real-time demand. This ensures the solar system remains active, optimizing energy generation without overloading the grid.

More energy, less failure

With the Embion EMS, the energy production of solar panels becomes much more efficient. The generated power is cleverly distributed: first to local devices such as heat pumps or charging stations, and only the surplus goes back to the grid. This prevents inverter shutdown, minimizes production losses and maximizes the efficiency of the solar installation.

By responding to the dynamics of the energy market and preventing grid overload, the Embion EMS not only helps maximize the use of solar energy, but also contributes to a more stable and sustainable power grid.
