Covolt Integrates with the Embion EMS for Smart Market Optimization

Energy management and energy market optimization are increasingly converging. Covolt, an independent energy aggregator operating as a BSP and CSP in the Netherlands and Belgium, has therefore established a direct connection with Embion via the Embion EMS API. With this integration, Covolt and its customers can take full advantage of flexibility markets, while the Embion EMS continues to control the local installation.

What does Covolt do?

Covolt manages and optimizes renewable energy installations for more than 900 customers. As a Balancing Service Provider (BSP) and Congestion Service Provider (CSP), they provide access to congestion and balancing markets and trade intelligently on the energy market to maximize the return on every kilowatt. Their AI-powered platform makes over 8.6 million control decisions fully automatically every day.

Covolt offers three core solutions: Flex Trading for market optimization, Power Control for power management, and Asset Monitoring for technical management of installations.

Covolt controls, Embion executes

In this integration, Covolt has established a connection from its platform to the Embion EMS via the Embion EMS API. This means that Covolt’s control signals—based on energy prices, grid capacity, and market movements—are transmitted directly to the Embion EMS. The EMS translates these signals into specific commands for the physical installation: batteries, solar panels, charging stations, or other consumers and generators.

This integration features a clear division of responsibilities, in which Covolt determines when and to what extent control is applied based on market insights, and the Embion EMS determines how the local installation implements those instructions, taking into account connection limits, local consumption, and the on-site configuration.

Market optimization without losing local control

What makes this collaboration unique is that the two layers of energy management continue to operate independently of each other. The Embion EMS remains active on-site as the local controller. It monitors connection limits, distributes energy among consumers, and continues to function even without an internet connection. Covolt adds an intelligent market layer that identifies real-time opportunities and translates them into control commands.

For end users, this means that their system is not only optimized locally but also actively participates in the energy market—all without them having to do anything themselves.

First Customers Live

The integration is complete, and the first customers have now switched to the combined control system provided by Covolt and Embion EMS. This is a significant milestone that demonstrates how the collaboration between a smart EMS and a specialized aggregator delivers tangible added value for the end user.
